You are providing care to a 3-day-old male who has just undergone the Arterial Switch Operation for Transposition of the Great Arteries (d-TGA). In preparation for separation from CPB, all of the following are necessary EXCEPT:

a) Core temperature > 36 oC

b) Infusion of vasoactive medications

c) Availability of blood products to address bleeding issues after separation

d) No pacemaker requirement

e) Afterload reduction

Answer d. It is not unusual for cardiac surgical patients to require pacing to maintain AV synchrony and improved cardiac output and perfusion. The need for a pacemaker should not prevent separation from CPB.
