Deep Hypothermic Cardiac Arrest (DHCA) is associated with significant neurological insult. Recommendations to limit these effects include all of the following EXCEPT:
a) Maintaining hematocrits at a minimum of 30%
b) Uniform slow cooling to 18oC, with application of ice packs to the head
c) Limiting DHCA periods to no more than 20 minutes
d) pH-stat blood gas management to decrease cerebral blood flow
e) Use of NIRS and trans-cranial Doppler technology

Answer d. All of the stated recommendations are correct except that pH-stat management of blood gases results in vasodilatation of cerebral blood vessels thereby improving (not decreasing) cerebral blood flow.
