Spirometry is a lung function test often used to evaluate children with asthma and can provide the anesthesiologist with information regarding forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume. It cannot be used to determine tidal volume, residual volume, total lung capacity or expiratory reserve volume which requires more complete pulmonary function testing.
