The ductus arteriosus:
a) is functionally a right-to-left shunt during fetal life
b) may be closed artificially by administering intravenous prostaglandin E1
c) usually persists as a patent vascular structure throughout the neonatal period before it fibroses
d) may reopen in response to overzealous ventilation with an FiO2 >50%
e) responds with delayed closure to the administration of indomethacin

Prostaglandin E1 is administered in order to keep the ductus arteriosus open; the ductus arteriosus typically closes in the first 12 hours of extra-uterine life; acidosis and hypoxemia may lead to reopening of the ductus arteriosus; indomethacin is a treatment option for closure of a persistently open ductus arteriosus.
