Prostaglandin E1 is administered in order to keep the ductus arteriosus open; the ductus arteriosus typically closes in the first 12 hours of extra-uterine life; acidosis and hypoxemia may lead to reopening of the ductus arteriosus; indomethacin is a treatment option for closure of a persistently open ductus arteriosus.
