Which of the following is FALSE about femoral nerve block?
a) The femoral nerve provides sensation to the medial thigh
b) The femoral nerve is located lateral to the femoral artery
c) The femoral nerve provides sensation to the medial leg
d) Patellar twitching is present when the femoral nerve is stimulated
e) The femoral nerve provides sensation to the lateral leg
Answer
Answer e. The femoral nerve provides sensation to the thigh (except for the posterior thigh) and the medial leg. The nerve also provides motor innervation to the quadriceps muscle (leading to patellar twitch with stimulation) as well as the Pectineus and Sartorius muscles. The femoral artery is used as a landmark for placing the femoral nerve block below the inguinal ligament. Here the femoral nerve lies lateral to the femoral artery and vein.
