Which of the following is TRUE regarding glucocorticoids?
a) Glucocorticoids are primarily produced in the zona reticularis.
b) Glucocorticoids increase glucose utilization by cells.
c) Glucocorticoids decrease hepatic gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, and glycogen synthesis.
d) Glucocorticoids increase secretion of surfactant in fetal lungs.
e) Cortisol increases production of ACTH via a negative feedback loop.
Answer
Answer d. Glucocorticoids play an important role in surfactant production in fetal lungs; they may also be administered exogenously to women in preterm labor to promote surfactant release. Glucocorticoids are produced in the zona fasiculata, decrease glucose utilization and increase gluconeogenesis (with a net effect of increased blood glucose), and decrease ACTH and CRH production via negative feedback.
