Kyphoscoliosis is associated with restrictive lung disease in children and this occurs because of decreased chest wall compliance, abnormal configuration of the diaphragm, decreased diaphragmatic contraction, and occasionally large airway kinking. Air trapping, mucous plugging, and airway hyperreactivity are most often associated with obstructive lung disease. Increased intra-thoracic diameter does not lead to restrictive lung disease.
