Choanal atresia has an incidence of 1 in 7000 live births and a bony
obstruction is present in 90% of cases. Infants are obligate nose breathers at rest,
but symptoms may improve with crying (mouth breathing). Unilateral disease
may not be diagnosed until later in life. Choanal atresia is part of the CHARGE
association, thus patients should be assessed for other anomalies.
