Risk factors for PONV in children include all of the following EXCEPT:

A. Duration of sugery > 30 min

B. Age > 2 years

C. Strabismus surgery

D. Family history of PONV

Answer

The answer is B. The age risk factor is > 3 years of age. PONV is extremely rare in children less than 2 and dramatically increases at age 3. These risk factors make up the Eberhart et al simplified risk score. Other risk factors include type of surgery (middle ear, hernia, penile, T/A, orchidopexy), length of surgery > 30 mins, family history of PONV and opioid use.[1]
