All of the following concerning informed consent are true EXCEPT:
A. Parents that are Jehovah Witnesses cannot refuse blood products (in a life threatening situation) for children < 18 years old
B. Patient assent is ideal in patients > 8 years of age
C. Patients <18 years of age that are pregnant are referred to as emancipated minors
D. Once an adolescent demonstrates the ability for complex thinking and understanding, they are able to provide consent for procedures and medical treatments
Answer
The answer is D. Children <18 years of age are NOT able to provide consent (unless emancipated) regardless of ability to comprehend. Demonstration of complex thinking and understanding is usually needed for ASSENT. [1].
