Answer

Answer d.

The Mapleson D circuit is most efficient for controlled ventilation due to minimization of efferent gas rebreathing. The Mapleson A circuit is most efficient for spontaneous ventilation. In the United States, the Mapleson D (or a variant of it, called the Bain modification) is the most commonly used of the open anesthesia breathing circuits.
