d) Neonates

Click for Answer

Answer

Answer d. Cardiopulmonary bypass replaces the normal pulsatile blood flow to the kidney with continuous perfusion. The loss of systolic peaks results in decreased renal medullary perfusion; in the neonate (whose autoregulatory mechanisms are not intact), there is a high risk of acute renal failure.
