Answer d. Cardiopulmonary bypass replaces the normal pulsatile blood flow to the kidney with continuous perfusion. The loss of systolic peaks results in decreased renal medullary perfusion; in the neonate (whose autoregulatory mechanisms are not intact), there is a high risk of acute renal failure.
