It is however entirely preventable by immunization. It is still a health problem in the low-income countries with high neonatal mortality rates reported. It is also a cause of childhood mortality. In its severe forms, it is a multi-systemic disease affecting the autonomic, respiratory, cardiovascular and renal systems requiring multidisciplinary management in a neonatal or paediatric intensive care unit.
